Sinking
is a video collage that re-imagines the sink as a portal. The work could be seen as a meditation on washing up or as a metaphor for wasted time in women’s lives but, for me, the sink is always interesting. I see the sink as a lacuna: an imaginary space or a dreamscape. My sink is usually piled high with plates and has bits of old food floating about in it but there’s always something beautiful about it. It is next to the window and picks up the reflections from the garden. It’s like a double exposure: the reflected images of the garden superimposed on the water. And the surface of the water is a film. The images move: a bird darts across the screen, a branch flickers in the breeze, a drip from the tap makes the whole scene ripple. It is a rockpool with secrets lurking beneath its surface.
